Never ending letters. In OG students discover the history of letters and their influence on spelling, reading & writing. This week I worked with a few students modeling clay to make the letters, i, j, u, v & qu. These letters are often not used at the end of English words. U and v were interchangeable until the early 1600’s. At that point u became a vowel and v became a consonant (thanks to printers). Many of these decisions were made by scholars in the 16th century who were working with orthographic conventions to develop what we now accept as standard English. Understanding spelling shows us there are fewer exceptions, and explain the structure of English.
